First Friday Art Walk in Ashland's Railroad District

The Gifts of the Dark Night of the Soul by Betsy Lewis Art Event Productions
Opens First Friday, February 5, 5:00-8:00 pm
Exhibit runs February 6-27, 10-6 Daily

Exhibit Description:

"The term "The Dark Night of the Soul" was coined by the 16th-century Christian mystic, St. John of the Cross, who used it to describe spiritual crises. Now it has also come to describe psychological ones. Often a dark night is triggered by devastating outer events. One of its symptoms is no longer having any sense of solid ground. And that is so. We've found that the solid ground we've created and believed in up until now was not completely based on reality. Sometimes all hope is lost and new inner resources must be found. A new and firmer sense of self can develop based less on external factors."

Paintings, drawings and sculptures by: Jinny Brown, Lisa Byrne, Victoria Christian, Christy French, Ann Hackett, Ron Hadath, Jessalynn Jones, Mary Landberg, Betsy Lewis, Janet London, Tarri Lucier, Melissa Markell and Marla Samuel.

Workshop Description:

What is "Up, Up and Away?" And Why Should Baby Boomers & Seniors Care?

"Up, Up and Away" as a 4-week hands-on workshop where people over 50 can easily learn the essential skills and attitudes you need to communicate with family and learn online - using an inexpensive laptop or netbook - anywhere you can get on a WIFI connection.

Over the 4 weekly sessions, together we will let go of painful, frustrating habits associated with "desktop computing" and get ourselves mobile and up "in The Cloud" where software is FREE and your data won't get lost anymore!

In "Up, Up and Away" you will learn how to set up a personal online learning space, connect to social networks where people care about the things you care about, and start sharing your stories and pictures using simple, FREE online tools. We'll use Google mail, Google Docs, free blogging software, simple social media (including Facebook, if you want), Skype, free online picture and video editors, free music and audio books, and other FREE applications.

Are you tired of computing being an isolated experience that leaves you frustrated, confused, and spending much more time and money than you'd like? Then please take this 4-week opportunity to change your relationship to your computer, the Internet, and the joy of lifetime learning!

"Up, Up and Away" will transform your experience of computing from slow, confusing and frustrating to fast, easy and more FUN than you ever imagined! What's more, you will open new doors that equip you to live independently and safely for many years to come. When you can use your own mobile computer to communicate easily and confidently, you and your family will connect more easily. And everyone will rest easier, too. Looking towards the future, you'll also be preparing yourself to connect directly with professionals on your healthcare team, too. This isn't science-fiction! Many low-cost telemedicine and telehealth support services are available now and just waiting for you to get online and try them!

To read some of my thoughts about Cloud Computing, Web 2.0, and the process of building trust in online relationships, please visit my blog: http://virtualmeetingcoach.com." Target="_blank">http://virtualmeetingcoach.com. Or feel free to sign up for my free 10-day e-course at http://virtualmeetingstartup.com to get a taste of the way I teach.

What Does It Cost?* Only $179 pays for 4 lively, hands-on sessions of 90-minutes. If you'd like to add a 90-minute private tutorial, you can also get a 1-on-1 session focused on whatever you want special help with for an additional $99. This is a special discount on my regular coaching fee made available only to participants enrolled in this course. The coaching value alone is worth $225.

*I want to be able to provide Rogue Valley Baby Boomers and Seniors with high-quality, high-value support for building your 21st century computer literacy, regardless of the size of your budget. I know times are tough... and it's also way past time for aging Baby Boomers and seniors to get comfortable using mobile computers to connect with our grandchildren and the entire global community of adults learning online.

Because of this, I have established a sliding scale for this class and I will trust people who want to enroll to request a cash fee that works best for you. If your financial situation is tight, I suggest you offer a 60-70% cash payment and supplement it with whatever other creative reimbursement strategies you want to propose. I encourage anyone who wants to enroll to engage me in an honest conversation about your situation. I will let you know what I'm needing at the moment - besides cash - and trust that we can come up with smart ways you can help me obtain some other things I need.

How Does This Work?

1. You provide your own wireless-ready laptop or netbook. PC or Macintosh-based, it doesn't matter which. Bring your laptop or netbook with you to class every time ready to get online.

2. At the beginning of the course, you will learn to use a private online WIKI, an easy online classroom environment that allows you to access private course materials throughout the week, between our live sessions.

3. At the first session, you will be matched with a learning partner. The two of you will coach each together, both in class and between sessions, using the course WIKI.

4. Between live class sessions, you will complete some simple assignments to help you get the maximum benefit from our face-to-face sessions.

5. If you choose to schedule a private, 1-on-1 tutorial, you will schedule your session with Meri at a time that is mutually workable. (This tutorial is a time to get Meri's full attention and help in any areas of special importance to you.)

Anne Heaton- Click for more information
Concert Performance by Singer/Songwriter Anne Heaton

Suggested donation, everyone welcome

Opening the evening for Anne Heaton will be the amazing cellist and vocalist Mai Bloomfield of "Raining Jane."

Anne began her musical journey as a child learning to play classical piano. While in college at the University of Notre Dame, she studied Philosophy and Theology. There she sang in a rock band, but did not begin writing songs until after graduation and a move to New York City. In New York, she started going to open mikes and joined a Harlem gospel choir. "I learned a lot of great old spirituals in this choir, such as 'Motherless Child' among others. John Motley, the choir director, and Cooleridge Taylor-Perkinson, an arranger and composer for the group, introduced me to a lot of early American music. I ended up being invited to tour in Europe as a vocalist with Jazz drummer Max Roach performing gospel, jazz and some of his original compositions."

"My biggest songwriting heroes, however, were always Peter Gabriel and Tori Amos. The most pivotal moment in music for me was hearing Peter Gabriel's 'Us' for the first time. I think this is when I decided I wanted to make music and write songs. I thought if I could ever touch someone else musically the way Peter did on this record or the way Tori had reached me in so many of her songs, I would have done something worthwhile with my life."

Also known for the infectious energy of her live performances -- "a natural performer [with] a rich, soaring voice" (The Seattle Times), Heaton toured behind both of these releases from 2001-2006 playing acoustic venues, coffeehouses, outdoor theaters, rock clubs, and festivals throughout the US. In 2005, Anne won Soul City Cafe, a national competition of live performances and online voting to choose Jewel's opener for her West Coast Tour. In addition to Jewel's tour, Anne also toured as an opening act for Melissa Ferrick and HEM as well as opened for/performed with Jill Sobule, The Pernice Brothers, Jennifer Kimball, Jonatha Brooke, and Edie Carey.

"Heaton comes up with a series of engaging pop arrangements for her lyrics-- tender, amusing, barbed and spiritual by turns. Nothing is neatly
resolved, but that suits Heaton's talents just fine
" (Washington Post)

"Heaton [has] a pop sensibility with an affinity for strong harmonies and hook-laden arrangements" (The Boston Globe)

"More of a storyteller than Norah Jones and definitely in the same category as far as talent and vocal range" (Newspapertaxi.com)

"Anne Heaton combines a healthy sense of New England songwriter folk and college radio-ready verve with a lovely vocal timbre. The result is [Black Notebook], a record that is alternately lush, sweet, funny and sorrowful." (Performing Songwriter)

"You can sometimes hear the influences of songwriting mavericks such as Tori Amos [and] Peter Gabriel in the music of piano-playing
singer-songwriter Anne Heaton, but Heaton's tunes generally tend to iron out her influences' quirks in favor of more mainstream songcraft
." (Chicago Tribune)

"Anne Heaton's songs are nothing if not evocative. Possessing a guided passion that never missteps, she brings you close enough to the fire to feel its warmth and see the excitement but never close enough to get burned." (Cincinnati Citybeat)

Free Lecture: Introduction to German New Medicine
By Christine Kleiman, B.S.

Free admission, donations welcome

Presentation Description:

GERMAN NEW MEDICINE encompasses the medical findings of Dr. med. Ryke Geerd Hamer. In the early 1980s, Dr. Hamer discovered FIVE BIOLOGICAL LAWS that explain the cause, the development, and the natural healing of diseases based on universal biological principles. According to these biological laws, diseases are not, as assumed, the result of malfunctions or malignancies of the organism but rather "SIGNIFICANT BIOLOGICAL SPECIAL PROGRAMS OF NATURE" (SBS), created to assist an individual during a period of emotional and psychological distress.

The biological laws that constitute this truly "New Medicine" are firmly anchored in the natural sciences. The latest scientific discoveries in cell biology, neuroscience and quantum physics have provided the evidence that our thoughts and emotions have a very real, measurable effect on our physical reality, including our physical health.

Presenter's Biography:

Christine Kleiman, B.S. Natural Health, Certified Wellness Coach, GNM Practitioner and BodyAccess Therapist, has studied all aspects of Natural Health for the last 25 years. But even though she has a comprehensive knowledge and a strong belief in natural healing methods and modalities, she always wondered about the 'why' of the disease. Her observations, and her intuition, have led her to the conclusion that there was a direct link between the patient's emotional state and the physical symptoms that person experienced. Having been introduced to German New Medicine a few years ago, has finally provided her with the logical and reproducable science that is at the basis of this true mind/body medicine. She has a Holistic Health Consultant practice in Ashland, Oregon.

I blog as "The Virtual Meeting Coach" and train clients face-to-face and online through my company, Virtual Meeting Startup. My popular online short course, 21 Sure-Fire Ways To Build Trust Working With Others Online, is available free at VirtualMeetingStartup.com.

Here in the Rogue Valley, I'm teaching two local courses: "Up, Up and Away," a 4-week hands-on workshop that takes people from "Technology Hell" to easy, fun mobile computing using cheap laptops and netbooks and free online software. "The Coach's Short List" half-day and full-day workshops help business people learn to make smart use of free virtual meeting tools to save time, money and fuel.

When I'm not working, I love dancing, gardening, hiking, biking, and fishing the wild rivers of Southern Oregon with friends and my sweet dog, Lady.

Maximum 12 participants per class! REGISTER NOW to save your place in the next session.

Astrology in Ashland Lecture Series: "The Spiritual Search... Through the Lens of Astrology"
By Audra Stenger

Cost: $6.00, General Public, $5.00 Seniors (62+), $4.00 NCGR Members

Events happen monthly, every third Monday 7-9pm at RVML (except July and August)

Presentation Description:

Some people have always been directed towards spirituality. Others have a singular experience and drop everything from their former lives to follow a spiritual path. Some decide to follow their own unique path without a teacher; some join groups. A few quit their search all together, sometimes after years of intense questioning. Whichever category you may fall in, did you know that you all have something in common with each other?

Astrology can help identify the nature of spiritual experiences, who is likely to have them, and when they may occur, shift or end, and why. This lecture will be an exploration of these astrological commonalities.

There are wondrous discoveries, but also pitfalls, on the journey to finding oneself. Included in the talk will be a discussion of what a healthy spiritual search looks like, and what is indicative of a dysfunctional spiritual group or teacher.

Presenter's Biobraphy:

Audra Stenger started in Astrology over 13 years ago while working as a paramedic. She noticed that there were more emergency room visits on full moons, and also that on occasion, several patients with the same birthday would be admitted to the hospital on the same day. Occurrences like these piqued her curiosity.

While continuing to practice astrology, she attained a Bachelor's Degree as a Physician Assistant in New York City. She has provided astrology readings to people from all walks of life and many countries, helping others discern the path towards their greatest fulfillment and happiness.
