Lecture: The Values War, And What You Can Do About It!
By John Lamy

Presentation Description:

Our value structures are at war with each other, and it's killing us. However, Integral values will end the values war and promote healthier solutions to our monumental problems.

Each of us operates from a fundamental set of values. Our values develop and evolve over time, in discrete steps or stages; it's not a smooth evolution. For example, kids value Magic and their Tribe (the roots of tribalism); the Bush White House, and 40% of Americans, value Law & Order; another 30% of Americans value Autonomous Thinking. The problem is, most of these value structures hate each other and are at war with each other. That's a serious problem, because the values war is acted out every day in Congress, at the UN, and around the world; and tragically, our public policy is the outcome of the mutual bludgeoning that constitutes the values war.

But there's hope: people aligned with the higher values structures, the first of which is Integral, realize what's going on and work to end the war. Integral currently comprises 1% of the population, but Integral people are highly effective in their work, so their effect is much larger than their numbers would indicate.

This presentation will examine the first seven value stages, and show how they work in individuals, in the public domain, and through history; and suggest how individuals can incorporate this idea into their lives, with great benefit to themselves and to the world.

The ideas presented here originate mostly in academic research, and have been refined and publicized by the philosopher Ken Wilber. I am presenting them here because this is by far the most helpful and insight-producing body of work I've ever come across; and the world urgently needs more Integral thinking to properly address the monumental issues that are rising in our time, like global warming, nuclear proliferation, and terrorism.

Presenter's Biography:

John Lamy received a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering from MIT, and an MBA from Cornell. He worked for Hewlett-Packard/Agilent as an engineering manager for 30 years, and as a management consultant for technology firms for 10 years. During that time he witnessed, up close and personal, the best and the worst in human behavior. He gradually developed ideas about the human side of engineering and management, which he was able to test in real situations with real managers. Watch for his new book, The Values War and The End Of Civilization: A Survival Handbook, in 2008.
