Presentation Description:
The Inner Critic is a voice that develops within you that echoes the concerns of your family, community, and culture. The inner critic absorbs these constant judgments and expectations of others, and begins to feel like a natural part of yourself. It is born in an attempt to protect you and keep you safe from pain and shame.
However, what was originally supposed to protect you and promote your general well-being is now making you self-conscious, awkward, and fearful of making a mistake. The original intent of the inner critic gets lost, and its basic message becomes: There is something wrong with you unless you conform to the values and beliefs of your family of origin or risk losing their love. This barrage of self-criticism is a desperate attempt to be accepted, succeed, and adapt to the world around you.
Since the inner critic has its beginnings in relationships (What will others think?), it will continue to affect all of your relationships, such that you will find yourself attracted to and surrounded by people with your socially disapproved and disowned selves. Your inner critic believes that these shadow sides of yourself must be suppressed, when what they really need is to be acknowledged and integrated.
Feeling vulnerable, anxious, or upset always underlies your critic. Attend this presentation and learn how to turn your inner critic into an ally, and achieve greater peace of mind and health.
Presenter's Biography:
Dean Shrock, Ph D. is a licensed psychologist who specializes in the psychosocial care of people with chronic disease, and conducts classes and seminars about holistic approaches to assist their recovery. Dr. Shrock has been Director of Mind-Body Medicine for a physician management group of forty cancer centers, and has taught a wellness program, "Taking Control of Your Health," to their cancer patients and families for eleven years.
This same approach can be used for various other health concerns, including chronic pain and fatigue, and fibromyalgia --- to get well or stay well. "Taking Control of Your Health" is offered currently as a six-part class series open to patients, family members, health professionals, and the general public.
