This Week's Video: "Sperm Wars"

"Sperm Wars" analyzes the ethical minefield surrounding reproduction. While science is pushing back the boundaries of making babies, the issues of sperm ownership, consent regarding its use, and parental rights are bringing up some interesting battles.

The documentary first looks at Pam Reno's unique situation. Her son Jeremy shot himself in the head and died. Pam's grief was immense. But then she realized that his sperm was available. She could create a grandchild with the help of an egg donor and a surrogate mother. But the government didn't approve the process, as the child would be in limbo after its birth. Its father would be dead, its surrogate mother wouldn't be obliged to care for it, and Pam Reno wouldn't be its genetic mother.

Another family indulges in a similar form of remembrance. Bruce Vernoff had died childless in his '30s. With his sperm, his wife was able to have their child without him. But when an interviewee refers to the child as a "souvenir baby," the question has to be asked: Were Bruce's wishes being realized after his death?
