Lecture: Finding The Oneness of God and Man
By John Max Morell

$5.00 - 20.00 Suggested donation, everyone welcome

Presentation Description:

John Morell is a life-long Christian Scientist who writes and lectures on the subject of Christian, Jewish and Islamic Fundamentalism. He shows their origins, their dangers, and how Mankind can move beyond them. John's second book: "The Elephant and the Blind Men- Finding the Oneness of God and Man" presents his philosophy which explains that Man himself is God. He devotes a chapter to all six of the major Religions with quotations from each pointing to the oneness of God and Man. He shows that each of us is more than a physical or even a spiritual body. Instead, each of us is, or includes, the entire Universe - which is our Consciousness. We each have in fact created our own Universe. John has created a Society called "The Society of the Universal Man", to promote this philosophy.

"The Elephant and the Blindmen" is an indictment of the world's great religions. It explores the theory largely overlooked by the religions that Man is one with God. The book presents quotations from many religions showing that Man is the very expression of God. We need to lay aside the word, "God" for such synonyms as "Spirit," and "Mind." He has formed the Society of The Universal Man so that those who agree with his philosophy can communicate with each other on the internet.

The Society of the Universal Man is open to all who want to find a philosophy beyond existing Religions of the East or West combining metaphysical teachings of Christian Scientists, the Hindu Upanishads, the Jewish Qabbalah, the Islamic Sufis. It offers a place on the Internet where people interested in these widespread ideas can join together.

Lecture: Improv Painting for Self-Discovery and Joy- Exploring Life with Paint and a Brush
By Shoshanah Dubiner

$5.00 - 20.00 Suggested donation, everyone welcome

Presentation Description:

Improv painting is a way to play directly and spontaneously with color and imagery, freeing you to discover and enjoy the power of your own creative capacities.

After 40 years as an artist, designer, and teacher, in 1999, Shoshanah discovered "process painting" as described by Michele Cassou and Stewart Cubley in their book *Life, Paint, and Passion.* During the next four years, painting intensively at Barbara Kaufman's Center for Creative Expression in San Francisco, Shoshanah's artistic vision and understanding of the creative process radically transformed .

Since 2006 Shoshanah has been guiding others in Improv Painting. In addition to her own deep understanding of and passion for the creative process, her teaching methods utilize Buddhist Mindfulness practice and the Hakomi Method of assisted self-discovery.

Improv painting is for people who have never painted before, or who were told as children that they weren't good in art, or who are accomplished professional artists. It is a method that allows them all to engage immediately in the creative process and become child-like in their freedom of their expression - TO HAVE FUN.

In a class situation, painting is done silently in a group. As the brush moves on the paper, we let any and all images that are held in the unconscious to come out on paper -- whether angelic or demonic. As we paint, we are mindful of judgments and doubts that arise, and we practice letting go of the inner critic. We focus on our inner process, not on the product on the paper. Because improv painting gives us permission to express ourselves authentically, it is inherently a healing experience.

Comments from students:

"The class I had with you gave me permission to express myself; I lost the fear of painting. . ." -Carmen Barroso, Therapist

"As someone who hadn't painted since grade school, I found it both fun and meditative to put paint on paper again." -Ann Strauss, Rehabilitation Teacher

Presenter's Biography:

Shoshanah Dubiner is an accomplished artist, designer and teacher. After receiving an MA in Comparative Literature from Harvard University and an MFA in Theater Design from Brandeis University, she worked as a costume designer and exhibition designer before founding her own computer graphics company, The Interactive Muse. She designed the educational animations for Microsoft's "Encarta" and "Explorapedia."

It was only after a period in the mid-1990s of teaching handwork and art at a Waldorf school and starting a practice of Buddhist meditation in the California Gold Country that Shoshanah discovered the power of "painting for process, not product." She was able to tap into deep sources of creativity that had previously eluded her, despite her successes as an artist and designer. Returning home to San Francisco she continued doing improvisational painting and had a solo exhibition entitled "Infinite Worlds Within" at the Canessa Gallery in San Francisco in 2003.

Shoshanah Dubiner now teaches painting to people who believe they can't paint or who long to experience the joy and spontaneity in painting that children have naturally. She has seen how almost everyone can benefit from expressing themselves in images. "All that most people need to lose their fear of painting is simply permission to be authentic in their creativity." Her classes and workshops here are called "improv painting," and are inspired by the writing of Steven Nachmanovich's "Free Play: Improvisation in Art and Life" and the teachings of Michelle Cassou and Stewart Cubley, who wrote "Life, Paint and Passion" and with whom she has studied. In her classes, she helps people dip their toe into the ocean of creativity and gain the confidence to swim.

Since moving to Ashland in 2004, she has volunteered as an artist-in-residence in the Ashland Middle School and curated an exhibition, hosted by Gallery DeForest in March 2007, of AMS students' artwork. In Ashland, she has exhibited at Gallery DeForest ("Miracle of Connecting" in 2004" with Craig Comstock, her partner at the time and now her husband), at Pangea ("Painted Dancers" in 2005, and "Dancing Scissors" and Dancing Brush" in 2006), and as Illahe Tile Gallery's featured artist in April 2007, and has participated twice, by invitation, in "A Taste of Ashland (2006 and 2007)."

Shoshanah recently opened Studio Viva, LLC in Ashland's 'A' Street Arts Building. There she offers classes and workshops, and pursues her own artistic interests, one of which is exploring "patterns in nature." Shoshanah's fascination with patterns in nature began in the '80s while designing a museum exhibition about symmetry. By 2003, she and Trudy Myrrh, the founder of YLEM (a San Francisco Bay Area group of artists interested in technology) had started a study group in visual math and pattern in nature in the Bay Area. Shoshanah, after taking a course in cell biology at SOU this summer, founded Patterns in Nature North, a group of Ashland art-and-science-minded people who want to look at and explore images of microscopic membranes, branching trees, and spiral galaxies.

Special Encore Presentation: At Risk- Ashland's Water
("THIRST" Documentary Video and Discussion)
Hosted by Art Bullock

Admission: $5.00 - $20.00 suggested contribution, no one turned away.

Event Description:

The highly acclaimed documentary Thirst shows what happens when cities privatize their water supply or water works. Thirst tells the stories of Cochabamba, Bolivia and Stockton, California, asking the key question: Is water a human right, or a commodity to be bought and sold in the global marketplace?

A handful of multinational corporations are buying water systems worldwide as a business strategy. Cities pressed for revenue sell their water systems and transfer management and/or control of municipal water to these corporations. This informative movie shows the politics and power of water. It will change how you think about water and city government.

We'll explore how these dynamics affect Ashland following the video.

More information: http://www.AshlandConstitution.org and http://groups.yahoo.com/group/OfThePeople

Video Description:

Is water part of a shared "commons", a human right for all people? Or is it a commodity to be bought, sold, and traded in a global marketplace? THIRST tells the stories of communities in Bolivia, India, and the United States that are asking these fundamental questions, as water becomes the most valuable global resource of the 21st Century.

A character-driven documentary with no narration, THIRST reveals how the debate over water rights between communities and corporations can serve as a catalyst for explosive and steadfast resistance to globalization.

Reviews:

"THIRST is a provocative portrayal in stark human terms of current battles over water privatization. Communities rise in protest; corporate interests seem to turn a deaf ear. Can there be a middle ground? THIRST provides a passionate jumping off point for a debate that is just beginning." Tom Graff, Environmental Defense

"THIRST brilliantly dramatizes a potential threat of great enormity. A careful and deeply disturbing film about the threat to human safety and survival worldwide by corporate attempts to privatize the earth's water supplies." Norris Hundley, author, The Great Thirst and Professor Emeritus of History, UCLA

"A moving and inspiring film about one of the biggest water issues of our day...it sounds a clarion call for citizens and governments to reaffirm that water is a public trust, not a commodity to be exploited for private profit. I hope THIRST is viewed widely, discussed at town meetings and in legislative debates, and that it energizes citizen involvement in water decisions. A powerful -- and needed -- film." Sandra Postel, Director, Global Water Policy Project

"Do you know who controls your water? You'd better find out. As this powerful film shows, it may already be a private corporation run from afar. THIRST challenges apathy and ignorance about our most precious resource and shows how every citizen's voice can, indeed must, make a difference. See this film, and be inspired to act." Peter H. Gleick, 2003 MacArthur Fellow and author, The World's Water

"THIRST is a remarkable film. The looming freshwater crisis is the greatest environmental and human rights crisis of our time. Not surprisingly, the move is on by powerful corporations and governments to commodify and cartelize the world's water supplies for power and profit. THIRST is the story of this assault and the fight to stop it." Maude Barlow, National Chair, Council of Canadians and Co-author, with Tony Clarke, Blue Gold, The Fight to Stop Corporate Theft of the World's Water

"Beautiful and engaging..." Carl Pope, Sierra Club Executive Director

"THIRST is an important and timely film, and vividly illustrates the human costs of commodifying a most basic human right -- water. From women in India struggling to care for their families in the absence of fresh water and adequate sanitation to the people of Stockton, California, fighting to maintain control over their water resources, THIRST tells a powerful story of resistance and survival." California State Senator Liz Figueroa (D, Fremont) Chair, Select Committee on International Trade Policy Chair

"THIRST beautifully shows how the labor movement can work closely with community groups and the environmental movement to defend public jobs and the public trust. Struggles for control of water could become the focus for creative new coalitions to reverse the tide of privatization." Peter Olney, Institute for Labor and Employment, University of California

"THIRST is a transformative experience. As patrons left the theater, it was clear that the entertainment they had witnessed had progressed to education, visual beauty to substantive understanding. They had been fulfilled and motivated, their minds engaged and expanded. Despite the fact that the issues raised often inflame the passions, audience members felt they had grown without rancor, moved forward without leaving any players or arguments behind." Professor Robert Benedetti, Executive Director, Jacoby Center for Regional and Community Studies, University of the Pacific

"THIRST documents how power, politics and money all combine in the raging international debate about water policy. The underlying issues of community versus corporate control are remarkably similar whether in India or the United States. The control of water may be responsible for more political, economic and even military clashes in the 21st century than was oil in the 20th." Congressman George Miller (D-7, California) Former Chair, House Committee on Natural Resources

"Surprisingly captivating...unlike so many other documentaries about multinationals -- documentaries that tend to be overbearingly supercilious and contemptuous -- THIRST simply lets the story tell itself...THIRST is like a message in a bottle sent from the future. It tells the beginning of what could be one of the major political and economic issues to shape the next century. Don't say they didn't warn you." Phil Busse--The Portland Mercury

"THIRST gives you dry mouth." Matthew Hirsch, San Francisco Bay Guardian

"Another smart bottom-to-top take on complexly related racial, economic, legislative, and individual issues. The crux here: can water access remain 'part of the global commons' everyone should have free access to, or is it doomed to become an economic commodity bought and sold like any other?...This important and engrossing film provides a spur to activism that no one should ignore, unless they're rich enough in obliviousness to propose, 'Let them drink sake.'" Dennis Harvey, San Francisco Bay Guardian

"By showing how activists in Stockton, Cochabamba and India are all...thinking globally but acting locally, Snitow and Kaufman give us a provocative look at the current and coming water wars...After seeing THIRST it will be hard to ever take water for granted." Jonathan Curiel, San Francisco Chronicle

"A groundbreaking and provocative new film about the rush to privatize what the filmmakers rightly define as the very essence of life." Silja J.A. Talvi, AlterNet

"THIRST insightfully and thoroughly explores the contentious issues surrounding water privatization, showing us that it's not merely a Third World concern but a dark and growing trend right here in our own backyard." Shannon Abel, HOT DOCS Canadian International Documentary Festival

"A compelling study of corporate greed, exploitation of the disadvantaged, and volatile uprising among civic-minded protestors demanding equal voice in a controversial issue...A valuable tool for awareness and activism, especially in water rich communities that could become the next battleground for the public's right to water, THIRST deserves to be seen by all who drink, flush, and cook with life's most essential element. Highly recommended." Video Librarian

Meditation with Swami K.M. Tayumanever (Swami Ty)

November 17, 2007 and December 15, 2007 7pm-9pm

Free admission, donations appreciated, everyone welcome.

Description:

Swami K. M. Tayumanavar (Swami Ty for short.), and the Jothy Marga Meditation group have been quietly meditating in Ashland for about 15 years, have recently decided to go a bit more public.

Swami Ty is an accessible teacher of meditation. He was under formal discipline for 15 years with a traditional Yoga Order. He lived and taught in India, Sri Lanka, Switzerland and Hawaii. A tradition in his order was that sometime after 12 years one had to decide to go on retreat, or leave and teach others. Swami was planning on retreat, but felt a call to go out and make some of the ancient teachings a bit more available in the West.

We ask questions of Swami for a while. Nothing is off limits, but we try to keep it spiritual. Then Swami leads a meditation using a mantram language that is mostly unknown in the west, but is a very powerful tool for self-exploration even when first introduced to it.

If you are having fun, you are doing it right. We wish to help people become whole in body, emotion, mind, and spirit. We are all in this together and the more we can get a degree of enlightenment in the world the transitions now underway will be easier.

There is never a charge for these teachings, however Swami puts out his begging bowl and hopes to receive enough to pay for gas food and rent of the room. He lives in the Northern California Desert, about 3 1/2 hours away by truck.

Lecture: Kinship with Animals-The Slide Show
By Ann Southcombe

$5.00 - 20.00 Suggested donation, everyone welcome

Presentation Description:

Ann Southcombe's slide show presentation mirrors her upcoming book, "From Gorillas to Squirrels-One Woman's 30 Year Journey in Kinship With Animals". Each Journey in the show is a place she has worked. There are Seven journeys. The show has many levels. It is a show with cute animal stories (which appeals to kids of any age :-) It shows, in a subtle way, that we are all connected, and that we need to treat animals better.

The slide show is designed to amaze and show new insights about our relationship with non-human animals, and encourages us to make major changes in our lives. The show demonstrates the implicit spirituality of being accepted as a trusted friend by so many animals - truly a gift from some higher power!

Presenter's Biography:

In 1970, Ann was the second woman to be hired as full time keeper at the Cincinnati Zoo. In 1978, Ann began working with "now-famous gorillas" Koko and Michael in a language studies program at Stanford University. She spent seven years working with an orangutan at the University of Tennessee. She then went to South America for encounters with jungle animals and the unusual Amazonian Pink river Dolphin. She worked as a caretaker at animal rescue ranches in California. Ann created enrichment activities for animals at the Lowry Park Zoo in Florida. She helped native wildlife at Wildlife Images (a rehabilitation center in Oregon.) Ann's animal friends have included elephants, bears, bobcats, lynx, parrots, crows, great apes and the not-so-lowly pro-simian bushbaby.

Facilitators' Biography:

Dominic Allamano is a passionate and potent voice of the emerging visionary generation, inspiring others to shine their light brightly by boldly and humbly shining his. Since his late teens, when he began to see clearly following life altering physical trauma, he has focused his energies in two interrelated realms. The first is the realms of experiential education and explorations of the embodiment of consciousness, while the second is in a deep exploration of the sociological and systemic elements of the dominant world culture. The merging of these two realms has allowed him to perceive many of the key patterns and dynamics that define today's world and hold the promise for tomorrow's.

He feels called to be as a midwife to the emerging culture, assisting both in its birth and development as well as in the navigation of the unforeseen consequences of humanity's past choices, which are defining the context for that emergence. Through extensive travels and speaking around the Pacific Northwest he has aligned with an inspired network of allies with whom he is crafting new paradigm networks and tools like the WorldCrafter's Network (http://www.worldcrafters.org) and CultureSeed (http://www.cultureseed.org) to support the emergence of this new culture.
