 Presentation Description: =0D=0A=
 =0D=0A=
Salvia divinorum, or "Diviner's Sage" is a unique, visionary sage plant=0D=0A=
from the Mazatec region of Mexico, where it has been used as a shamanic=0D=0A=
and healing tool for countless generations. Now widely and easily=0D=0A=
available in the United States and the West, Salvia divinorum is sold=0D=0A=
as a "legal high" with virtually no legal restrictions. Often=0D=0A=
misunderstood, salvia is commonly likened to LSD in the mainstream=0D=0A=
media with little to no appreciation of its actual effects or the=0D=0A=
nature of the experience it engenders.=0D=0A=
 =0D=0A=
In this presentation, author Martin W. Ball, Ph.D. will discuss the=0D=0A=
unique nature of Salvia divinorum, how it can be used responsibly, its=0D=0A=
role in ritual practice, and the changing cultural contexts in which=0D=0A=
Salvia divinorum finds itself as well as how it can be incorporated=0D=0A=
into contemporary neo-shamanic and spiritual practices in the West.=0D=0A=
 =0D=0A=
Short lasting, radically introspective and often overpowering, Salvia=0D=0A=
divinorum, in stark contrast to other so-called "party" drugs, has=0D=0A=
virtually no recreational value. Instead, salvia is best understood as=0D=0A=
an entheogenic agent - a plant that "awakens the divine within."=0D=0A=
However, the term entheogen also implies a reverential treatment of the=0D=0A=
plant and its use. The presentation will therefore focus on how the=0D=0A=
plant can be approached and used as a creative and spiritual catalyst=0D=0A=
for those who choose to visit with the sage on their own spiritual=0D=0A=
 paths.=0D=0A=
