Complete training in systems and operations is provided, with manuals and procedural documentation is provided, along with good on-the-job support by other staff. A library science background is helpful but not required.
Selection
Individuals interested in joining the Volunteer and Intern Librarian Program complete a Librarian Volunteer Application form which outlines the qualities the Library is looking for in a volunteer. The form asks for two references and a brief description of skills and/or experience that might be of value to the Library. The Volunteer Coordinator (or an assigned staff member) checks the references in a timely manner. The applicant is then notified and arrangements are made for training.
Roles & Responsibilities
Shifts: Volunteers are asked to sign up for an average of one two-hour shift per week. The Volunteer Coordinator will post a calendar with the schedule. Volunteers will be notified by e-mail or telephone of open time slots.
Volunteers are to be punctual and are asked to arrive 10 before their scheduled shift, not only as a courtesy to the patrons when opening, but also to the librarians being relieved. They are asked to honor their commitment to the Library and find a substitute if they are unable to work their scheduled shift. If unable to find a substitute, the Volunteer Coordinator (or in her absence, the Office Manager) is to be notified as far in advance as possible.
Public Relations: Volunteers are asked to conduct themselves in an open and friendly manner and to treat visitors with respect and courtesy at all times. Volunteers will be neutral in their interactions with the public and are asked to refrain from promoting their own interests or private offerings. If there is a problem relating to this, the Volunteer will be reminded of the Library's policy, and the continuation of such activity could lead to the Volunteer's dismissal.
Monthly Volunteer Librarian meetings will be held the first Sunday of each month, or as otherwise noted, to inform, elicit suggestions, express appreciation, promote camaraderie and team-building, and provide for a forum for problem solving. Other volunteer and staff socializing events are organized periodically throughout the year.
Training
All Volunteers receive training covering the Library and its services, and the volunteer tasks, roles, and responsibilities. These are listed in detail in the Volunteer Training Manual and include: Materials processing, opening and closing the library; logging shifts; using the Concourse program to check in, check out, renew, reserve, and unreserve materials; welcoming new visitors; signing up new members and volunteers; accepting donations; noting problems; setting up for Tuesday presentations; taking telephone calls; and performing optional down-time tasks. (See Volunteer Training Checklist)
Supervision and Evaluation
Interns will be supervised and evaluated by a staff member who will provide any additional training, and complete all required documentation necessary for the Intern.

work, cataloging, special events, etc.
Volunteers
bring the library enthusiasm, energy, added talents, and a fresh

They enrich the library's offerings, rather than only provide basic
duties. Volunteers are liaisons to the community and by their
contribution are advocates for quality library service. The library
staff and its volunteers must work together for mutual satisfaction.
All
volunteer tasks must aid the library in achieving its goals and
objectives, and be consistent with the purpose and intent of the
volunteer program. Volunteer talents, experience, and interests will
be considered in assignment of tasks. All RVML volunteers are trained
and directed by the Volunteer Coordinator who oversees all aspects of
the volunteer program. The Volunteer Coordinator will schedule
volunteer activities taking into account the library's needs and each
volunteer's capabilities and wishes.
RVML
does not compensate volunteers for time spent, or expense incurred,
except by special arrangement with the Library Manager or Executive
Director. Volunteers working in the library have liability insurance
coverage for property damage and/or bodily injury to others which
results from the performance of their volunteer duties, and to
themselves. Volunteers are required to adhere to all library
policies, especially relating to privacy and confidentiality.
